The Story
"Focus Forward" began when I was approached by Tobias Harrison (Cinematographer) to create a spec commercial together.
With both of us being interested in the sports genre, we threw various ideas around but nothing hit the mark. In the midst of our brainstorm, we realized we were in the middle of one of the biggest sport events in the world - the Olympics.
We thought, "why don't we make a film about a real individual with a real story rather than another spec?"
Thus the search began as we sprung out and cold emailed various local athletes that were competing for Canada at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. After many phone calls and emails, BMX racer Drew Mechielsen stood our for her openness and her insane story of competing with an unknown broken foot.
With the help of FYA Media House and various organizations including WFW and Cineworks, we were able to complete this 3 minute short film highlighting Mechielsen's true, unaltered experience at the Olympics.
